We use the word ‘know’ too lightly. We use it in a variety of situations, but after our discussion about knowledge, I don’t think our use of the word ‘know’ is really appropriate.

We can know the same person, but in what sense do we really know that person? When someone asks you, “Do you know this person?”, what is it in our minds when they say the word ‘know’? 


I would pause for a moment, and consider the relationship I have with the person, especially if the person in question is just an acquaintance. I wonder, can I say I know them? Sure I know them; I know their name, and their face, but does that really mean I know them? I wouldn’t know them in the same sense, let’s say, a childhood friend would know them.
